When is Valentines Day? It always falls on the 14th of February. In 2012 it will fall on a Tuesday.
Looking a bit further ahead than that? In 2013 it will fall on a Thursday. Why not Wednesday in the year 2013? Because 2012 is a leap year, meaning February will have 29 days instead of 28.

Opinions vary as to when Valentines Day actually started. Some say it was a Roman who was martyred for not giving up Christianity who died on February 14, 269 A.D.
Still others claim it was a bishop named Valentine, stationed in the Roman Empire. At the time, Claudius the II was Emperor, and thought that unmarried men made better soldiers. He made a law that young men could not marry.
Sometime around 270 A.D. Valentine became an advocate for the soldiers, whom he felt sorry for. He began to conduct secret marriages.
It didn't take long for what he was doing to be discovered, and he was put into jail, where he attempted to covert Claudius to Christianity. (Claudius worshiped Roman Gods and wanted Valentine to do the same).
Valentine was sentenced to execution on February 24, 270.
A different version of the story is that Valentine fell in love with his jailer's daughter. Just before his death, he wrote her a note signed "your Valentine." After his death, he became what is know as a Patron Saint.
Valentines day is now a day for lovers to exchange love messages. Common symbols for this day are hearts, cupids, teddy bears, roses, love poems and words of adoration.
Children often exchange cards, as do adults. Valentines day is the second-largest holiday on which we send cards, coming in only after Christmas. It is extremely commercial with Hallmark Cards and American Greetings being the largest producers of greeting cards in the world.
