Picnic Food Ideas

Learn to make a variety of picnic sandwiches; perfect for your next romantic date!

Sandwiches can be as basic or as complex as you care to make them. We feel for picnics, simple is the best way to go.

Our "best of" list:

Club sandwich with tomato cucumber cheese held together with toothpick and a green olive on top for garnish

  • Cucumber
  • Chicken Salad
  • Clubhouse
  • Chicken Salad
  • Cucumber
  • Egg Salad
  • Ham and Cheese
  • Peanut Butter and Jelly or Banana
  • Reuben
  • Roast Beef
  • Tomato
  • Turkey
  • Tuna
  • Wraps of any kind

Cucumber sandwiches are probably the easiest to make. They are simply paper-thin slices of cucumber placed between slices of crustless and lightly buttered bread.

Clubhouse sandwiches, on the other hand, are a bit more complex. Made up of layers of fillings between three slices of bread. Fillings include such items as: lettuce, tomato, bacon, cheese and mayonnaise. Usually a second type of meat is added, such as turkey, chicken, ham or roast beef.

Egg Salad sandwiches can be easy or complicated, depending on which spices and dressings you like to use. A simple recipe:

  • 2 Eggs, boiled and chopped
  • 1 Green onion, chopped fine
  • 1/2 stalk of celery, finely chopped, optional
  • Mayonnaise
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Mix eggs, onion and celery in a small bowl.

Add mayonnaise to your taste, along with salt and pepper

Refrigerate mixture or keep on ice if taking on a picnic.

Assemble by spreading mixture between two pieces of bread once you arrive at your picnic location and are ready to eat!

Ham and Cheese is another easy recipe. Thin slices of cheese, with a slice or two of ham between two slices of your favourite bread that have been spread with mustard or mayonnaise, or both.

Peanut Butter sandwiches, always a hit! Peanut butter, jam or bananas between two slices of your favourite bread. Yum! Always popular with children. If there is a peanut allergy, try substiting almond or cashew butter, or try sunflower seed butter (yup, it's a real thing, we have some in our fridge right now!)
