Giving Flowers

The Top 10 list of flowers that are given most often; along with photos of each so you can see what they look like. Flowers can get confusing!



So that the recipient knows what you mean when you give them a particular flower of a certain color, you should include a card that explains what the flower(s) signify. That way, there will be no confusion or uncertainty in your feelings or intentions.


Carnations:

Symbolize affection, energy and health. Like other flowers, the color matters and gives deeper meaning:

  • Pink: I'll never forget you.
  • Red: Admiration.
  • Solid color: Yes- acceptance.
  • Striped: No- refusal.
  • White: Pure love, or innocence
  • Yellow: Rejection


Daisy:

Daisies symbolize innocence and loyal love. Gerbera daisies are popular.

Gardenia:

Symbolize ecstasy. They can also mean a secret love; great to give to a secret crush!

Lilac:

Lilacs symbolize first love or new love, making these flowers very popular at weddings.

They are also flowers often given to new mothers, as they can also symbolize the first love between a mother and child.

Lily:

Like Carnations and Roses, different colors of lilies have different meanings:

  • Calla Lily- means beauty
  • White Lily- means purity
  • Orange Lily- means hatred
  • Tiger Lily- means wealth or pride
  • Yellow Lily- means happiness


Lily of the Valley:

Symbolize sweetness, purity and humility.

Orchid:

Symbolize love and beauty.

Rose:

Often thought of as the most romantic in our list of flowers. The color of each rose carries a different meaning:

  • Red Roses- mean love (of course!), beauty and passion.
  • Yellow Roses- mean friendship, happiness, joy and a new beginning.
  • White Roses- mean purity, innocence, unity and sincerity.
  • Pink- mean appreciation, or elegance. Can also be used to say thank you.
  • Peach- mean anticipation, desire, or optimism toward the future.
  • Coral- mean desire
  • Orange- mean enthusiasm or desire
  • Lavender- mean love at first sight.


Stephanotis:

Symbolize marital bliss and are therefore popular at weddings. They can also symbolize the desire to travel, so if used at a wedding, could reference the upcoming honeymoon.

Tulip:

Typically signify fame or charity. Color is important and give a deeper meaning:

  • Red- a declaration of your love for the other person.
  • Yellow- means hopeless love
  • Variegated- tells the recipient that they have beautiful eyes.
