  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 16 cups water

close up of a glass of iced tea with straw and ice cubes

For the sugar syrup:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sugar

For garnish:

  • Lemon wedges
  • Mint

Preparation:

Make ice cubes out of tea, or freeze water with lemon or mint added. Using plain water ice cubes will dilute the tea.

Place tea bags and baking soda in a heat resistant container.

Pour 4 cups of boiling water over the tea bags and let steep for at least 15 minutes.

Add the remaining 12 cups of water and remove the tea bags.

Let cool.

Bring pot with one cup of water to a simmer and add the sugar.

Stir until all sugar dissolves completely.

Remove from heat and let cool.

Add the syrup sparingly to the ice tea, or let everyone add it to their own glasses to suit their taste.

Add the ice cubes and garnish with mint leaves and lemon wedges.

The iced tea will keep for up to a week in the refrigerator.
