How to Buy Flowers Part Two

Read the first page here.

Tips on Caring for your Flowers

You've learned how to buy flowers, now you need to know how to keep them looking great and get them to last!

Here we go:

  • Cut the stems under running water. It will help extend the life of the flowers for up to one week
  • Use a sharp knife to cut the stems; not scissors. Scissors crush the stems and the flowers don't receive as many nutrients from the water
  • Remove leaves that will be below the water line. They will rot and cause bacteria to grow, which could harm your flowers.
  • Use the flower food that was provided with your arrangement; follow the mixing directions

  • Change the water daily
  • Cut the stems just a bit every day
  • For woody stems and branches, cut with sharp pruning shears
  • Add a splash of hydrogen peroxide or bleach to the water. This won't harm the flowers, but will kill any bacteria.
  • Keep flowers out of excessive heat, such as direct sunlight, or appliance that give off heat, which will cause the flowers to dehydrate.
  • Keep them away from excessive cold, such as cooling vents or under ceiling fans. Most flowers last longer in cool conditions, but too cool will cause them to die.
  • Want the buds to open faster? Place stems in warm water (not hot!) with flower food.

That's it! You now know not only how to buy flowers, but how to care for them as well. Won't your partner be surprised!
